Become a Reading Buddy

Reading changes lives. Every day, dedicated teachers work tirelessly to help their students succeed. They know which children need extra reading practice and encouragement, but with so many responsibilities throughout the school day, they simply don't have enough time to provide individual reading support for every child who could benefit. That's where our community can make a lasting difference.

Reading Buddies partners caring volunteers with elementary students for about 40 minutes each week. Teachers provide the educational expertise and select the reading materials. Volunteers provide something equally important: encouragement, consistency, and another caring adult who reinforces the important work already happening in the classroom. Most volunteers read with one student, although some opportunities involve two students or a small group.

Last school year, 52 Reading Buddy volunteers served students through Ambassadors of Dignity. This year, between Ortiz and Colvin Elementary schools, they have asked us to recruit 120 volunteers, more than double last year's team. The need has never been greater, and neither has the opportunity to make a difference.

What begins as a reading program often becomes something far more significant. Students grow in confidence. Teachers feel supported by a community that values their work. Volunteers discover the joy of investing in the next generation. Schools build stronger connections with their neighborhoods. Literacy is the catalyst. Mutual flourishing is the destination.
